Graduation and other weekend pursuits

I done got my BA today. Hooray!

Also, it was my work's Christmas party this evening. All was going well until the boss's wife decided to embarrass me in front of the entire staff by mouthing off like the puritanical harridan she is. I responded by making an abrupt, possibly even dramatic, exit. Not so hooray.

Sitting here trying to find something to distract me from my potentially employment-free future, I learned that Club Troppo is seeking nominations for the "best" blog posts of 2006. Not sure I share their enthusiasm for the project, but I can't see it doing any harm. Unlike my work's Christmas party...

Congratulations for getting your degree.

Many congratulations for the getting of the degree. That work situation sounds like a real bugger, but I doubt they're going to fire anyone for shenanigans at a work party.

The blog awards are a bit of a sham; The Spin Starts Here crowd managed to get in a few joke candidates last year (they won). And the whole nomination and voting process is terribly disorganised.

I probably should clarify that I didn't actually do anything embarrassing, it's just that my boss's wife is insane and I deemed it prudent at a certain point to leave before I was provoked into something embarrassing. This is all very cryptic, isn't it?

Anyway, thanks to you both for the congratulations.

Oh, you poor saveloy. REALLY wish I had been there to see you flounce out. Also, who is that stunning MILF that you work with????

You can tell us, Tim, it's only the interwebs.

And congratulations, on both your intelligence and good manners.

Congrats Tim on the degree. Did you go to the graduation ceremony?

I love walking through campus just before graduations. Parents are so proud. Siblings are testing out the mortar boards. The air is filled with the scent of hundreds of congratulatory bouquets.

You didn't give up that to attend a work party, did you? You deserve another degree!

Congratulations on graduating, Tim! Hopefully, since your post, the job thing sorted itself out. Otherwise, you'll be joining the ranks of the over-qualified and underemployed that is populated by BA grads.

Or else, after a couple of crappy jobs, it won't be so bad 'cos at least you can pay the rent.

Then, five years later, you promise yourself to 'use your degree'. Two years after that, you're swearing 'cos "I have a degree, I should be earning more than this!".

Especially when you discover how much social work students you used to teach first year sociology to make for their starting pay.

Bitter? Who me? Nah! Don't know what you mean…

Congratulations again.
